Precious Moments
For the first 7 years of our marriage, the easy gift to get was a Precious Moments figurine from Snow's at Century Plaza or some other similar retail store. It was an easy way to rack up the husband points, but it had to have meaning. You didn't just go in and randomly pick one. The anniversary ones were easy - just match a number - but the special occasions, they took more thought. Anyway, she loved them and I had points galore. Of course, once 4 years had passed and several PMs had been purchased, I had to step it up and get a curio cabinet to keep them in and keep them safe. No one explained this to me at Snow's when I started this. You will see the curio in one of these images.
When we found out we were pregnant with Abby, she wanted something special done for the baby room. Something... precious. It just so happened that the fine folks that made Precious Moments made a new baby ensemble from the sheets, to the blanket, a lamp and many other things. What they didn't make were the stick-on wall decor that you can get these days. But what the new mommy wants, the new mommy gets!
I took some images from a Precious Moments calendar (I think) and starting freehanding them on the wall, then started painting them, tear-drop eyes and all, sitting on clouds, telling the new baby to "sshhh". One of these as you will see was faceless. We took the picture before I was finished. But the main thing is, my Bride loved it. It's exactly what she wanted and she told me over and over how much she loved it and loved sitting in there holding that new beautiful baby in her arms while slowly moving back and forth in her glide rocker and singing to her sweet Abby.
Those images will never leave my mind. She had everything she had ever wanted when she had Abby. And then having Luke 2 years later just added to her joy to the point she was over-flowing. Kristi was the little girl with the dolls that always wanted to be a mom. And she was the best there was. Going thru pictures the last few days have shown me how much she loved those two babies of hers. Hundreds and hundreds of actual paper pictures, not the digital ones that get stored on drives and in clouds but tangible ones she can pick up, look at, kiss and then hold tight to her chest because she remembers each "precious moment" so clearly in her mind. She was born to be a mom and she excelled at it. She says her biggest regret in life is not finishing college. I say her best accomplishment is having a doctorate in being a mom with honors in showing how to love unconditionally, praying over, crying over, protecting, disciplining lovingly, giving constantly and expecting nothing in return.
